Reporting directly to the Vice President of Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant Vice President & Controller will have management responsibility over Towson’s financial accounting and operations, including development of semiannual and annual financial statements, internal and external reporting, inventory and plant accounting, capital projects management, accounting policies and procedures, general ledger reconciliation and audit management, grant accounting compliance and reporting. In addition, this position will play a major role in supporting and maintaining the University’s automated financial accounting system (Oracle Cloud). This position will handle the accuracy and completeness of the organization’s accounting to be in accordance with GAAP/GASB and the NACUBO FARM Manual. The Controller will ensure that internal controls are in place, enforced, and reviewed for conformance to accounting and financial standards and applicable regulations. Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.
Responsibilities and Duties
Oversee the activities of the Accounting Department for timely and accurate maintenance of the general ledger and financial management reporting.
Oversee the Capital Assets Manager.
Develop and maintain financial management systems and internal controls required to ensure that University assets are safeguarded and that accounts are appropriately maintained to ensure accurate financial data.
Responsible for the analysis, reporting and accuracy of financial data related to IPEDS reports, the proper classification/depreciation of fixed assets and capital projects, 1099 reporting, grant and financial aid draws.
Identify and analyze the University income streams for UBIT reporting. Prepare tax return submission to USM.
Oversee Financial Accounting & GAAP/GASB reporting to include managing the University’s external audit and financial reporting process.
Manage the periodic internal financial reporting process of the University.
Monitor and reconcile all University asset and liability accounts.
Serve as a liaison to external auditors.
Identify and analyze the University income streams for UBIT reporting. Prepare tax return submission to USM.
Hire, train, evaluate, counsel, motivate and develop staff. Establish individual and unit goals in alignment with the Administration & Finance and University’s strategic plan.
Support University workforce development initiatives including diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Manage staff activities associated with the preparation of important repots to Senior Leadership including, but not limited to, Interim and Year-End Financial Statements.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years of related experience
CPA
Preferred
Master’s degree
Experience with a complex ERP system in a large organization environment
