The Department of Recreational Sports is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge, wellness, fitness, personal skills and quality of life for students, faculty, staff and the community. In addition to the competitive and recreational sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of fitness activities, classes and state of the art equipment. Aquatic activities and swimming pool facilities serve youth and adult participants in a wide variety of programs including youth camp, learn to swim program, aquatic safety and rescue classes, and emergency response American Red Cross certification courses. Outdoor trips, clinics and day programs are offered through Cal Adventures. Recreational Sports also offers events year-round for students and the campus-community.

Responsibilities
Program Operations
- Plans, organizes, and leads the comprehensive safety and risk management program for the department. Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates all safety and risk management training events.
- Provides a quality control system for maintaining high safety standards.
- Responsible for all risk management policies and duties pertinent to program participants and staff.
- Establishes policies and procedures to reduce general liability.
- Ensures all staff is appropriately trained and certified, keeps records regarding those trainings.
- Enforces campus policies and procedures effectively.
- Serves as the primary contact with Environmental Health and Safety including Emergency Shelter preparation and disaster preparation.
- Serves as a member of the Community Emergency Response Team.
- Collaborates with Recreation Department facilities staff to ensure that facilities and equipment are properly maintained for the proper use and safety of participants.
- Oversees first aid, CPR, and related safety equipment and supplies inventories.
- Submits orders as necessary, within budget limitations.
- Ensure a strong, consistent in-service educational system for recreation student and professional staff.
- Keeps records to verify that all staff have completed the required trainings for their position (CANRA, Sexual Harassment, etc..).
- Keeps records of recreation staff who are vehicle driver approved and maintains departmental vehicle maintenance records.
- Teaches CPR, 1st Aid, AED, CA Title XXII, Lifeguard & Lifeguard Instructor classes to department staff and for fee-based community classes.
- Coordinates the hiring and training of additional instructors when necessary, provides supervision of those instructors.
- Facilitates safety training for CANRA and Clery Act compliance.
- Responsible for all risk management related duties for the department to include appropriate trainings and establishment of policies and procedures to reduce general liability and enhance overall safety.
- Develops and designs standard forms such as accident/injury reports, incident reports, etc. to ensure a systematic approach to organization and management of programs.
- Reviews all accident and incident reports and determines policy and procedure changes necessary to mitigate risks where possible.
- Create the Rec Sports' Injury & Illness Prevention Program. Present the departmental Injury & Illness Prevention Plan to all employees and maintain effective two-way safety communications.
- Provides on-site supervision during large, complex, and high-risk events.
Personnel Management & Supervision
- Responsible for the direct supervision of up to 10 student staff and part-time instructors. Creates weekly work schedules ensuring proper staffing of classes.
- Ensures staff is properly trained for their assignments and inadequate numbers to efficiently meet the required level and quality of service.
- Hires, trains, and evaluates those staff.
- Ensures all staff is appropriately trained and certified.
- Maintains current and comprehensive manuals in relation to policies and procedures.
Budget Planning and Management
- Responsible for the preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a life-cycle plan for the purchase and turnover of equipment used in the Safety program.
- Design and prepare annual program budget.
- Responsible for long term budget forecasts and analysis of the Safety budget.
- Prepares quarterly and annual reports for the department Director that present program evaluations, statistics, and budget accounts recommendations.
- Ensures that all generated income is deposited and allocated to the appropriate accounts.
- Provides inventory reports and recommendations for facilities, equipment, and supplies.
Marketing and Development
- Works with the Recreation Department marketing team to ensure all programs are effectively marketed to the UCB community.
- Generates revenue from offering safety classes
- (CPR, 1st Aid, Lifeguarding) for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.
Miscellaneous
- Review employer First Reports for all injuries.
- Conducts quantitative and qualitative trend analysis to identify patterns of personnel injuries and mishaps; analyzes the results of lost time injury claims data to evaluate the effectiveness of occupational health and safety programs and facility designs.
- Manage UC Risk Management reports (non-employee injuries) as needed.
- Serve as departmental representative on various committees on campus.
- Participates in staff meetings, activities, and events.
- Maintain files and records and prepare reports.
- Assists with the management of youth camps as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Red Cross CPR required.
- Standard First Aid Training Certification required.
- Client service focused, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
- Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
- Thorough knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
- Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
- Ability to work in youth camps, fitness and outdoor programs.
- Strong service orientation; program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking skills, skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.

Preferred Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
- Red Cross CPR and 1st Aid Instructor certification.

Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $69,200.00 - $85,000.00.
