The Associate VP, Risk Management (AVP) serves as a leader and key advisor across the institution on enterprise risks, internal audit, code of conduct, ethics, and compliance matters. The AVP provides an oversight role to help motivate administration, faculty, and staff to maintain a culture of ethics, compliance and shared responsibility to support the university’s strategic direction and mission. The AVP works to help the institution identify, assess, and proactively manage or mitigate risks across a broad spectrum, including reputation, operational, financial, compliance, fraud, technology and security. As the university's risk landscape grows ever-more complex, the AVP provides the information and analysis to enable the institution to make risk effective decisions that sustain and create value. The AVP maintains effective working relationships and ongoing open communication with the university community, senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.

- Guide and advise leadership in the ongoing review and refresh of the university’s risk profile and risk appetite. Lead efforts to reduce business risks that can put the university's profitability and productivity at risk by partnering with key university stakeholders on strategies to bring a systematic, focused approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, controls, and governance processes. Advise on and recommend mitigating processes to help minimize or avoid losses.
- Establish and maintain an integrated risk management framework and foster a risk culture that is communicated and understood throughout the organization.
- Establish risk metrics and reports, including losses and incidents, key risk exposures, and early warning indicators. Present to senior leadership on key risk areas. Help monitor the university’s risk exposure.
- Provide overall leadership, vision, coordination and direction of the Internal Audit, Compliance and Enterprise Risk Management functions and their activities:
- Coordinate the University’s compliance program including overseeing the development, review and revision of compliance-related policies and procedures; serve as a channel of communication to receive and direct risk management issues to the appropriate resources within the University. Track alleged violations of regulations, policies and procedures and ensure an appropriate University response, coordinate effective monitoring, and training programs. Provide oversight for the Protection of Minor Children Program and the Misconduct Reporting Hotline.
- Enable the efficient and effective governance of significant risks, and related opportunities by managing and monitoring a comprehensive enterprise-wide risk map.
- Ensure Internal Audit plans and executes a comprehensive university-wide, risk-based internal audit program that complies with professional internal auditing standards.
- Serve as the liaison for the Board of Trustees’ Audit Committee.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Skills & Abilities Required
- At least 10-15 years of demonstrated effective risk management leadership, including executive experience (e.g. strong internal audit background, compliance).
- Proven track record in diverse staff development, coaching, performance management and the use of inclusive decision-making to meet organizational objectives.
- Business and financial judgment and a strong understanding of processes and operations.
- Ability to influence a culture of risk awareness in the organization.
- Strong sense of collaboration and ability to develop positive relationships with key business stakeholders and demonstrate respectful, constructive negotiating skills.
- Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements.
Preferred Requirements
- Higher education experience is a plus.
- Experience liaising with Board of Trustee or equivalent governance body is a plus.
