Job Description: This position ensures the safety and well-being of students, employees, and visitors of the University of Saint Joseph. This position provides supervision of the Public Safety Officers working on all shifts and works closely with the Director of Safety & Risk Management in furthering the public safety mission at the University. The Associate Director assists the Director with all aspects of department management and operations, and acts for the Director in their absence.
Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)
- Supervise Public Safety Officers (PSOs)
- Review daily logs and incident reports
- Provide timely feedback regarding job performance, conduct formal performance appraisals, and initiate corrective action when indicated
- Ensure that safety inspections are completed as scheduled
- Provide and/or arrange for training and certifications
- Manage PSO scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage for routine operations as well as non-routine events and activities
- Oversee parking and traffic enforcement, including issuance of parking permits, collection of fines, and recordkeeping
- Assures the establishment of and adherence to a clear communication path from department staff to the Director using the chain of command.
- Assist the Director with internal investigations of complaints filed against department personnel
- Assist with Title IX investigations
- Assist in drills, exercises and emergency management responsibilities
- Assist with preparation of various narrative and statistical reports, including data collection and tracking
- Perform public speaking to groups as assigned
- Assist the Director with service contracts and maintenance of life/safety and communication equipment
- Provide 24-hour response for urgent or emergency matters, including reporting to campus or designated site when required
- Work independently while respecting the chain of command
- Clear communication and collaboration with the Director is essential so that the University's public safety mission is accomplished efficiently and utilizing best practices
- Position requires clear thinking and decision making in stressful and/or emergency situations
Job Requirements:Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in related field
- Minimum ten years' experience in police, public safety, or equivalent required
- Minimum three year's supervisory or administrative experience required
- Incident management/emergency management experience strongly preferred; extensive knowledge of incident command, emergency operations, communications networks, regional affiliations
- Experience in a higher education setting preferred
- Valid driver's license
Other Qualifications
- Capable of completing ICS 100, 100 HE, 200, 700, NIMS certifications within 6 months of starting employment
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with students, co-workers, and campus visitors; demonstrated ability to maintain positive professional relationships and a strong customer service orientation
- Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents, strong public speaking skills
- Ability to create a positive work environment while maintaining the strict standards of the Public Safety Department rules and regulations
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
- Flexible and able to multi-task
- Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus
- Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, and diplomacy
- Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public

Additional Information:The anticipated salary range for this position will be $63,000 to $70,000 per year. The final offer will be based on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
