The Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) team is responsible for the strategic planning and oversight of the university's comprehensive insurance program and for directing risk management processes in collaboration with other university departments to assure persons and assets are appropriately protected. The team works with all levels of Vanderbilt departments and external insurance brokers and carriers to ensure the institution has the adequate types and amounts of insurance coverage. Using robust claim trend analysis and market research, the team advises departments on opportunities to reduce claims, mitigate risk and ensure appropriate insurance coverage is in place. RIM is also responsible for the oversight and administration of the Protection of Minors policy and working with departments to implement practices to safeguard minors in all university operations and facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- On site or live support for operational units, staff, students and families to assist with incident response and related questions, including ensuring support for students and families impacted by on-campus or university-related incidents.
- Claims and subrogation support and management including:
- Acts as primary point of contact with the university's insurers for insured property and general liability claims.
- Supports operational and academic areas in preparing loss documentation, preserving evidence, investigating causes of losses, and evaluating the university's potential liabilities.
- Supports operational and academic areas in collecting insurance reimbursements for insured claims and in pursuing insurance and/or responsible third parties for liability matters -- e.g., auto physical damage, contractor property damage, etc.
- Assists in risk identification
- Collaborates with internal stakeholders to develop risk mitigation plans to increase safety and reduce loss in workers compensation, general liability and auto insurance
- Works with internal and external stakeholders to provide risk mitigation education, training and support to operational areas
- Reviews and responds to property insurer risk mitigation recommendations with internal and external partners to achieve solutions
- Develops pre-loss consulting and education strategy, including analytics and diagnostics
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in safety, business, engineering, technology or a related field
- Minimum 3-5 years' experience in similar role required and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Significant experience with customer support or customer service; position will have dotted line reporting to Communications and Office of the Chancellor
- Project management and leadership skills
- Knowledge of Loss Control & Safety procedures including but not limited OSHA, MSHA, ANSI and DOT
- Specialized experience in supporting compliance with FMCSA/DOT regulations and developing Fleet Safety programs preferred
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, procedures and processes involving government agencies and insurance companies
- CSP, ARM and/or Ergonomics designations are preferred
- Bilingual Spanish ability in speaking and writing is preferred
- Advanced Excel analytics skills are preferred
- Can communicate clearly and professionally verbally and in writing
- Demonstrates appropriate empathy for challenging situations
- Collaborative and able to work within all levels of university operations to achieve objectives
- Able to create and implement successful strategies for risk mitigation and claim resolution
- Able to analyze and report financial data to support claims information gathering
- Can work independently and remotely when needed
- Receives moderate to minimal supervision
