Director of Risk Management and Chief Risk Officer
The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a Director of Risk Management and Chief Risk Officer who is responsible for the University's and Penn State Health's insurance claims management programs and the University's risk management program while maintaining and cultivating a culture of awareness to identify exposures that exceed the scope of traditional insurable risks. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Finance and Business with a dotted line to Penn State Health's General Counsel, the Director of Risk Management utilizes the principles of informed risk evaluation to lead an office that serves as a resource to senior leadership, academic, and administrative units.
Primary responsibilities of this position include:
Leads a team of professionals with responsibilities for University risk management, insurance program development, and insurance claims management.
Serves as President of Nittany Insurance Company (Nittany), a captive insurance company and subsidiary of the University, and works with staff to develop effective insurance strategies to mitigate risks and reduce costs.
Collaborates with Nittany and other insurance providers and partners to develop effective financial and risk mitigation strategies.
Leads an Enterprise Risk Management Council of colleagues from various areas across the University to evaluate and monitor existing and emerging risks, develop mitigation plans, and reports out to senior leadership, the Risk Subcommittee, and the Audit & Risk Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Reviews and evaluates the adequacy of University policies and procedures relating to institutional risks.
Aligns and prioritizes mitigation strategies for the collective risks that expose the University to negative financial, strategic, operational, and reputational consequences.
Educates the broader University community in risk management principles and techniques to create a sustainable environment and expectation of risk management.
Provides informative reports to the Board of Trustees through its Audit & Risk Committee on significant risk topics, the University's risk profile, and the operation of the risk management system, to enable Committee oversight in accordance with its charter.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher, plus 7 years related experience. Master's degree and 10 years related experience preferred. Advanced certification including Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Designation preferred.
Supervision experience and leadership of people and programs with accountability for risk management is required.
Experience working in a higher education environment preferred.
Experience working with academic medical centers and related health-system risks preferred.
Experience in the areas of risk management techniques, global awareness of risk management principles and practices, enterprise risk management program implementation, insurance coverage innovation, risk financing, captive insurance utilization, strategy, and project management preferred.
Experience developing key partnerships across a variety of stakeholders to collaborate and gain buy-in on initiatives.
