What you be doing in this role:
The Paralegal serves as assistant to Vice President, Associate Directors, and Managers in the Department of Risk Management. Responsibilities include, assisting with the legal notification process, medical malpractice claim set up and processing, sequestering relevant records, and data entry of claims and financial data in the Risk Management Data base and Department log. The Paralegal is responsible for keeping the Department case database current and coordinating reports. The Paralegal also assists with litigation discovery, third-party subpoenas, and preservation of evidence requests, calendaring, logging, processing and communicating with departments and employees as necessary. This individual will also coordinate all administrative and business systems and processes to ensure efficiency and that the Department is in compliance with all CSHS policies and procedures. In this role you will:
Review, process and set-up all initial general and professional liability claims files and notify the third-party claims administrator. Assist in maintaining "Master List" of case log and legal and financial logs for all open and closed general and professional liability claims.
Process and request all initial medical, billing and imaging records for litigated and non-litigated claims.
Assist in responding to discovery requests including communicating with outside counsel and internal clients and obtaining responsive information and documents.
Collaborate with Security and internal clients regarding patient property claims including further investigation, review and resolution. Communicate with patients, family members and others as needed regarding patient property claims.
Communicate with patients, families and members of the public regarding complaints, ensuring complaints are routed to the appropriate departments for investigation, review and response. Collaborate on resolution and response of complaints, including communicating outcome to patients, families or members of the public.
Maintain, edit and revise calendars of Risk Management attorneys to ensure adequate coverage of all ad hoc and committee meetings.
Maintain and process Departmental employee personnel files. Ensure files are current and in compliance with CSMC policies and procedures. Calendar due dates for Departmental employee activities including annual health clearance and ongoing education requirements.
Fulfill requirements set forth in California Business & Professions Code SS 6450(c)(1). Maintain compliance with the American Bar Association continuing education requirements for paralegals.
Bachelor's degree in Business or a similar major preferred.
Paralegal Certificate from ABA approved institution required.
A minimum of 3 years Civil litigation experience, preferably in medical malpractice required.
