Loyola University Maryland is seeking a University Controller to serve as the chief accountant of the University, providing leadership over general accounting, financial reporting, payroll, treasury, and other transaction classes. The University Controller:Is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting activities of the University. Trains, develops, and coordinates the work in general accounting, payroll, and treasury. Partners with the Executive Director Financial/Auxiliary Operations to assist with oversight and support of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Student Administrative Services as it relates to GAAP. Provides expertise to executive staff on external regulations, internal financial operations and matters pertaining to the financial operations of the University. Responsible to plan, direct and manage all aspects of the general ledger including, but not limited to, control and management of the chart of accounts and preparation of consolidated financial reporting and analysis. Oversee all aspects of general accounting, preparation of monthly and year-end closing, year-end audit process and tax returns. Responsible for the implementation of financial and accounting systems, and for the accounting policies and procedures relevant to the campus community; to foster responsible use of funds, sound accounting and internal controls, and efficient, user-friendly business practices. Review and approve all requests for new general ledger account setup or inactivation of existing accounts. Oversee, review and approve journal entries of subordinates and expenditure transfers for accuracy and proper authorization. Work to minimize correcting entries, partially through education and training of the Loyola community. Manage the daily operations of the monthly close cycle and oversee the financial close of periods. Function as the primary administrator for all fixed asset accounting. Maintain internal controls over the general ledger and accounting information systems. Identify systemic problems, research options and recommend corrective action(s). Oversee reconciliations of general ledger and operating accounts, including, but not limited to, cash, investments, fixed assets, and endowment. Reconcile contribution revenue and pledges receivable to the general ledger in conjunction with Advancement Services. Coordinate, review, and resolve any differences in the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts routinely and at fiscal year end. Prepare financial statements and footnotes in accordance with GAAP and supported by auditable schedules and analysis. Serve as lead in coordination of the annual financial, A-133, and NCAA audits and management letter responses. Complete financial portion of IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) and other internal and external reports annually. Assist Human Resources with the annual financial statement preparation of the 403(b) employee retirement plan. Oversee and coordinate the tax function. Review all financial tax reporting for the University to ensure compliance with federal, state and local reporting requirements and tax filings and presents the University effectively in public filings. Act as the University's primary liaison with tax authorities; coordinate and prepare responses to all tax related information requests. Serve as the chief accountant of the University; develop written recommendations and file memos for review and approval by the Associate Vice President for Finance regarding management estimates, application of GAAP and internal accounting procedures and controls. Analyze existing internal control policies and procedures and research best practices. Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures. Provide leadership and supervision over the functional areas of general accounting and financial reporting and payroll and treasury operations. As Chief Accountant, will partner with the Executive Director Financial/Auxiliary Operations to assist with oversight and support of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Student Administrative Services. Lead, motivate, develop and coach direct report staff; provide guidance, training, and supervision. Hire and manage performance. Provide support to the Vice President for Finance in the Associate Vice President for Finance's absence. Identify and implement recommendations to elevate level of services, including financial reporting, provided to internal customers and improve operating efficiency and effectiveness.
