Cornell University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, seeks an Associate Controller to assist with the management of the University’s Division of Financial Affairs (“DFA”). The ideal candidate will be a seasoned, innovative financial leader with extensive experience in a complex organization.
Managed by the Associate Vice President and University Controller, and comprised of approximately 100 professionals, DFA supports Cornell University’s missions, priorities, and initiatives by establishing policies, processes, and systems that promote careful and responsible management and protection of Cornell’s financial resources. The Associate Controller will not only lead approximately 35 professionals in General Accounting, Financial Operations, and the University Business Service Center; but will also assist the Associate Vice President and University Controller in the management of other DFA departments. This individual will work closely with campus leadership to establish the strategic direction and priorities for the university’s financially- related systems, applications, policies and reporting.
The Associate Controller will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving an enhanced Internal Control framework throughout the University. This includes analyzing and identifying process improvement opportunities and collaborating with campus leadership to scope and ensure alignment with strategic priorities. The Associate Controller is also responsible for staying current with accounting changes as promulgated by FASB, GASB and other regulatory agencies to ensure that the university’s annual financial statements are prepared in accordance with GAAP.
The successful candidate will be a CPA with an MBA or Master’s degree in business, accounting or finance, coupled with a minimum of 7-10 years of financial accounting, analysis and management experience ideally gained in a multi-entity higher education setting(s).
In addition to current technical accounting knowledge, the Associate Controller must possess the requisite leadership and communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituents at all levels, and the ability to navigate and succeed in a complex, decentralized organization.
