Loyola University Chicago (Loyola), a private university founded in 1870 and one of the largest Jesuit, Catholic Universities in the United States, invites nominations and applications for the newly created position of Vice Provost for Research (VP-R). The VP-R will provide leadership, operational management, and oversight for central research administrative units across the university and carries overall responsibility for managing the grant submission and management processes, systems, and compliance and education needs of the central research administration functions at Loyola. Specifically, the VP-R has direct responsibility for the Office of Research Services across the three campuses. Staff in these offices number approximately 130 individuals with an annual budget of approximately $15 million. The position reports directly to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer.
The VP-R will have University signatory authority for all three campuses and have a presence on all three campuses as the senior research administrator managing this comprehensive approach for research administration at Loyola. Essential elements in this approach must include enhanced levels of customer service for faculty and researchers, the development of best of class information systems in support of business processes, and excellent training and career development support for staff. The VP-R will also ensure that all research administration operations are in compliance with regulations, policies, and laws that govern externally sponsored research activities in addition to addressing ever-growing research volumes. The VP-R will ensure that these activities are conducted in a manner that supports the needs of the University research community and effectively meets Federal guidelines. The VP-R will maintain a complete and accurate knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and agency guidance, required for Institutional oversight of laboratory animal care and use, radioactive isotopes, biohazardous materials, human stem cell and embryonic tissues research, conflicts of interest, scientific misconduct, and human subjects protections. The VP-R will regularly review draft and collaboratively implement changes to University policies relating to these research compliance areas. The VP-R is responsible for assisting research faculty with navigating the legal environment around patents, the protection of intellectual property and copy rights.
Qualified candidates will have a PhD or terminal research degree, though under certain situations, an MA/MS from an accredited institution of higher education will be accepted. Previous work experience (at least five years) must have been in research and grant administration, in a senior role in a university, non-profit or research institution. An understanding of the federal research funding climate, sponsoring agencies and funding opportunities is required, as is extensive knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies related to research compliance, and Federal and other regulations (current and emerging) governing sponsored projects administration. Candidates should bring experience working effectively with a wide range of internal and external constituencies, including faculty members, research staff, committee members, deans, administrators, clinical affiliates, business partners, and federal agencies and have a commitment to delivering customer-centric service.
