Job Description: The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) seeks applications for a Business Manager position. NBMG is a research, public service, and educational unit housed on the UNR campus. NBMG serves as the state geological survey and provides analysis, information, and data dissemination for Nevada’s geology, natural resources, and geologic hazards. The Business Manager is responsible for administering the complex financial, administrative, and human resources operations of NBMG in collaboration with and on behalf of the Director. The position maintains significant discretion and authority regarding how to administer the operation efficiently and effectively in consideration of short- and long-range goals. The Business Manager is responsible for a full range of fiscal operations, including budgeting and fiscal management of State funds, external grants, and recharge accounts. Responsibilities include preparing financial, analytical, and forecasting reports; developing budgets; managing pre- and post-award activities for external grants; and identifying possible funding opportunities. The Business Manager regularly assesses financial performance to identify and analyze problems and recommend solutions. The position provides financial consultation, guidance, and training to faculty and staff to ensure compliance. The Business Manager also administers the human resources operation for NBMG. The position collaborates with the Director to ensure adequate staffing for research and service activities. Responsibilities include preparing reports; overseeing the employment process through hiring and terminations; managing, mentoring, and coaching staff; and providing human resources consultation to supervisors.
Additional responsibilities will include representing NBMG in the absence of and at the discretion of the director; public outreach activities; ensuring proper assignment of bureau resources; assisting the director with public relations efforts; and preparing specialty reports with statistical analysis and narratives.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years OR Master’s Degree and one (1) year of related work experience. Related Experience: budgeting, accounting, and human resources experience; experience managing high-level business operations; supervisory experience.
Certification and Licensure: State of NV Driver’s license within six months of employment
Preferred Qualifications: Budgeting and accounting experience in a government or higher education setting. Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
