Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Risk and Safety Services, the Director Risk Services leads the campus risk management program in support of university and campus objectives, providing leadership in comprehensive risk identification, loss prevention, risk management, university reputation risk strategies and incident response. The incumbent also acts as liaison between UC Santa Cruz and various external agencies and regulatory bodies, including coordinating with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and other UC campuses.
The director is the designated campus official responsible for providing the broad scope direction and leadership for all programs, services and initiatives housed in the Office of Risk Services. Programs include Workers Compensation, Insurance, Global Enterprise Risk Management, and Behavioral Intervention Programs. The director also provides guidance and support for the University Healthy Campus Network and the Smoke and Tobacco Free Campus initiative. In collaboration with the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the director also co-leads Safety, Wellness and Injury Management programs and Be Smart About Safety loss control programs. The incumbent provides management level guidance for the entire portfolio of campus self-insurance and commercial insurance programs and provides consultative expertise to the campus in all areas of enterprise risk management. Responsibilities include supervision of seven FTE Risk Services staff and shared responsibility for Safety, Wellness & Injury Management (SWIM) programs with an annual operating budget in excess of one million dollars.
Risk Services is part of the UC Santa Cruz Business and Administrative Services (BAS) division and is one of five units that comprise the Risk and Safety Services unit. Risk Services supports the campus by helping to identify risk exposures, recommending strategies to reduce or eliminate identified risks, and administering the campus's insurance programs to facilitate maximum recovery from accidental losses.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Understanding of theoretical underpinnings of comprehensive enterprise risk management (costs, benchmarking, compliance, data analytics and best practices as they relate to risk management activities).
Knowledge and experience in affected program area (workers' compensation, work related injury management, general liability, professional liability, global risk management, disability management, etc.) and applicable laws.
Management experience and ability to administer complex office that provides services in university environment.
Proven ability for effective communication and collaboration across broad and diverse constituency groups.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
