The Office of Risk Management & Insurance is responsible for the property and casualty operations of the University and Health System in the areas of property insurance, general and automobile liability insurance, workers’ compensation, fine arts, medical, dental, and veterinary professional liability, international travel, and student athlete insurances. The office identifies and evaluates areas of potential exposure to risk and implements measures to reduce risk across the institution.
Included in these activities are the purchase of property and casualty insurance to protect the institution and its subsidiary or controlled entities against risk of financial loss, managing services with insurance brokers, carriers and claims service providers, and educating operating units of the University with respect to the scope of the insurance coverage.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Risk Management & Insurance, the Associate Director of Risk Management will manage the liability insurance program for the University and Health System. The position will oversee the operations of the general, professional, excess, and auto liability insurance coverages.
The primary responsibility of the Associate Director is the liability claims management function in a complex, fast paced institution including multiple distinct healthcare entities and various controlled subsidiary entities. These activities include developing defense strategy, coverage determinations, managing outside counsel, reserving claims, cost containment, identifying risk transfer, and supervising third party claims administrator. The position will attend mediations and trials as necessary to provide settlement authority. Additionally, the Associate Director serves as a primary participant in a Risk Retention Group and is responsible for presenting claims, chairing various committees, and attending annual meetings.
The Associatet Director is also responsible for providing risk assessments, policy and procedure creation, administering deductible buy down policies, and facilitating waivers. This position will assist with contract review, underwriting activities, and insurance renewals. The position will participate in Risk Management & Insurance presentations on campus. Additionally, the position will provide analytical analysis surrounding claims data and metrics. The position will also assist Director with various accounting and departmental administrative functions.
