Assistant Director of UW Dining-Business Operations

OVERVIEW This newly created position, reporting to the Director of UW Dining, will manage the resources that support UW Dining operations, systems and oversee the Starbucks Licensed Stores with over 30,000 transactions a day.
RESPONSIBILITIES Business Management: Provide leadership to projects assigned by the Director. Ensure direction is strategic in nature and aligns with HFS and UW Dining mission and values.
Oversee execution of unit priorities, associated action plans and measures of success.
Responsible for planning and implementation. Direct unit strategic initiatives and process improvement efforts. Set the standard for the outcome of a project; identify the policy and write them.
Lead the work of project teams, including planning and setting priorities, resource management and the evaluation of progress.
Focus on process improvement with the goal of improving the customer experience and reducing process burden on staff.
Administer the terms and requirements of all operating unit agreements, including internal UW departments (UW Med, Art, etc.) and external companies (Starbucks, Pagliacci). Monitor compliance and take corrective action as needed.
Understand unique risks associated with Dining operations, such as staffing with a unique and regulated workforce, turnover, inventory safeguards and management, purchasing and sourcing of inventory, food safety, etc.
Administer the purchasing agreements, including restrictions on competitors (Coca-Cola). Monitor purchasing discount quantities to maximize rebates. Ensure that team reviews and approves invoices timely, in order to maximize early payment discounts.
Support compliance and policy from high level, involving subject matter experts from all departments at appropriate times, delegate as needed.
Assist in executing communication and marketing strategies with the authority to institute standards at each location.
Leadership and Supervision: Model and incorporate UW Dining mission and value statements at all levels within supervised locations. Become Brand Management certified for select national brands on campus with the initial emphasis on Starbucks.
Ensure compliance with policies related to time, leave, as well as collective bargaining units.
Communicate HFS unit goals and objectives to the UW Dining management team and ensure that these goals and objectives are clearly communicated to all staff within the units.
Supervise the work completed by direct reports, ensuring appropriate productivity and quality and provide constructive feedback so as to support success.
Oversee direction and management of the Starbucks licensed agreements (Suzzallo Library and Husky Den locations).
Supervise direct reports through annual performance evaluations, development planning and informal and formal training.
Supervise UW Dining Systems Specialist and Operations Manager.
Financial Management: Provide business leadership by understanding the environment within HFS and the campus community and the financial impact to the business.
Apply best practices to the financial management of UW Dining to maximize revenue and minimize cost.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with business partners, involving them at critical times in decisions that affect finance decisions.
Balance the complexities and the big picture of the financial arena and impacts, i.e., payroll issues, resolving potential issues that could result in an audit.
Technical Management & Support: Direct a centralized hub for non-technical support of the menu management, point-of-sale and business systems that support UW Dining operations.
Align with Department and unit goals and values, identifying and prioritizing resource allocation to ensure that operational and strategic goals are fulfilled.
Use data to evaluate and execute the business. Understand what data is available in current state, how it is best used, and how future initiatives should be organized to maintain or improve data utilization.
Ensure that best practices are followed in the use of technology, including acquisition, upgrades and testing.
Prepare and deliver technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Hospitality or Business Management, Organizational Leadership and Supervision or related field. Six years of experience that includes successful:
Strategic planning and budgeting.
Experience implementing a large-scale system in a complex operating environment.
Assessment of financial and operational performance.
Administration of major systems that support a dining or similar retail operation, including menu management, inventory, point-of-sale and financial reporting and analysis.
Development of policies and procedures.
Supervision of technical and support staff.
Effective communication skills, including giving presentations and training to technical and non-technical staff.
Problem-solving that reflects creativity and resourcefulness with a high degree of flexibility.
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, tact and commitment.
Appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Mentoring staff, creating a positive work environment and fostering professional development.
A salary range of $95.000.00 to $105,000.00 annually.

Paid vacation, sick leave, as well as ten paid holidays a year and one personal day.
A Monday through Friday schedule, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and remains on call the remainder of the time and is required to respond to problems if/when necessary depending on the extent and severity; position infrequently attends Department events that occur outside the regular work schedule.
