LA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IS SEEKING A Deputy Chief Risk Officer
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is seeking a DEPUTY CHIEF RISK OFFICER to assist the Chief Risk Officer in the administration of one of the largest risk management programs in California, including the health and welfare benefits impacting employees, dependents, and retirees; including the Owner Controlled Insurance Program which covers majority of the District’s construction projects and activities.
About the Division:
The Deputy Chief Risk Officer receives administrative direction from the Chief Risk Officer and exercises general direction over branch directors and lower-level management staff. This position works out of the central LAUSD offices at 333 South Beaudry Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90017.
About the Job:
The Deputy Chief Risk Officer assists in the administration of the Risk Management Division, and participates in the planning and organizing of Division functions, and acts as the Chief Risk Officer as required to assist the Chief Risk Officer with typical Division duties such as:
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree*, preferably in business administration, public administration, or a related field. College courses in law, insurance, risk management, or safety engineering are highly preferable. An advanced degree in law, insurance, risk management or a related field is preferable.
Experience: Three (3) years of risk management experience at the management level with direct administrative authority in an organization with a multi-unit risk management operation or departments.
Experience in at least two (2) of the major responsibilities in risk finance, integrated disability, or employee group health benefits is required. Experience in the investigation and adjustment of workers’ compensation claims and general liability claims in the public sector is preferable.
Possession of valid certification as an Associate of Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Claims (AIC), or Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) preferred.

1. Management class, exempt from bargaining units.
2. Exempt from FLSA.
3. An Employee in this class is subject to the reporting requirements of the District’s Conflict of Interest Code.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE LAUSD anticipates hiring a DEPUTY CHIEF RISK OFFICER who is well versed in the area of insurance, including employee group health and risk management. He/she will be budget savvy, strategic and an innovative professional with a proven track record of effectively leading and directing enterprise-wide insurance and risk management services of large organizations, preferably within the public sector.
The ideal candidate for this senior management position will: *Possess an extensive background/experience working in management level positions with responsibility over liability claims and procurement of insurance; He/she will be knowledgeable about current best practices in the area of risk management and possess preferred certifications and an advanced academic degree. Experience in disability management, workers’ compensation and health and welfare benefits is highly desirable.
