Elevating Rice’s research achievement and reputation is a key goal of Rice’s strategic plan, the Vision for the Second Century, Second Decade. The Assistant Controller for Research and Cost Accounting leads and directs a staff of 17 who are responsible for the administration of the post-award functions for over $165 million in sponsored research programs. Those funds come, in large part, from seven federal agencies, several state agencies and multiple foundations and corporate sponsors. The Assistant Controller manages an office that is responsible for the accounting, financial reporting and post-award administration of sponsored projects and the preparation of cost studies, including the Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Cost Study, Fringe Benefit Rate Study, and Cost Accounting Standards Disclosure Statement (DS-2). S/he is responsible for fostering an environment which promotes innovative and sound business policies and practices that balance controls, compliance and customer service.
This position is a very visible position working with all areas of the University including, but not limited to, Deans and Department Chairs, Principal Investigators (PIs), Postdoctoral students, department and research assistants, the Vice Provost for Research, the Vice President for Finance, the Office of Tech Transfer and all areas of the Controller’s office. This position also interacts frequently with contacts from various funding organizations.
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience with increasing experience
Related experience in research administration and/or accounting, which includes at least three years in a leadership role and experience working with multiple federal funding sources.
Either a Certified Research Administrator or Certified Public Accountant is preferred

Preferred skills include:
- Demonstrated ability in change management. - Report writing skills (Tableau and/or Argos). - Understanding of government costs principles and their application to University-sponsored programs. - Experience in negotiating rate agreements.
