Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller reporting directly to the University Controller. This individual must be skilled and experienced with the ability to provide collaborative leadership in the organization's accounting and related functions. The Assistant Controller must possess strong communication skills and the ability to interact productively with all constituents of the University. Under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller will assist in providing leadership to the University in the areas of domestic and international taxation, compliance and specific aspects of the University’s general ledger and financial reporting, including, but not limited to, investments and long-term debt.
Responsibilities include the following:
Review existing financial controls and provide recommendations for change to strengthen and maintain compliance consistent with the COSO framework and other regulatory agencies who have jurisdiction.
Document compliance controls for the Controller’s Office for internal and external purposes.
Develop compliance management checklist and demonstrated proof of completion.
This position works with the Director of Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance.
Adhere to federal and state tax compliance requirements, resolve tax notices, gather data and assist in tax field exams. Provide tax guidance to specific departments as needed.
Prepare University tax returns and related financial disclosures.
Review and/or prepare all filings requirements, including but not limited to, corporate filings, unrelated business income, international, post-issuance bond compliance, employment, independent contractors, scholarships and fellowships, non-resident aliens, sales and use, real and personal property, and federal excise tax.
Determine appropriate tax objectives, scope, and methodology and actively participate in decisions related to tax matters with University management.
Propose and implement modifications to existing accounting policies and procedures that impact tax and compliance.
Develop tax-related communications and training for University departmental personnel to improve awareness on tax matters and financial compliance.
Monitor the University's tax compliance, particularly in high risk tax areas, identify potential tax exposure due to non-compliance, recover taxes paid in error, if any, and facilitate process improvements to mitigate compliance gaps and weaknesses.
Investment Accounting and Debt Management
Responsible for investment, endowment and long-term debt accounting for the University, assuring financial reporting is prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
The incumbent will work on special projects including researching technical issues, providing data to other stakeholders for key reports including bondholders and rating agencies, implementing new accounting standards, drafting financial statement disclosures, responding to external auditor requests, and maintaining investment and long-term debt reporting systems.
Maintain compliance of all bond covenants.
This position works with the Treasury Management office.
Effectively leverage available technology and other resources to maximize technical applications to support accurate and timely reporting.
Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in tax, compliance and accounting trends and legislation including University standards and policies.
Benchmark against best practices and implement positive change.
Demonstrate strong business acumen, accounting knowledge, and communication skills.
Identify opportunities for efficiency or improved decision support to ensure that current practices meet the evolving needs of the University.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
3-5+ years of prior experience in higher education
A comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, management of complex transactions, and professional standards in accounting practice
Experience and strong technical skills pertaining to tax preparation and review, tax compliance and tax research
Excellent research, analytical and communication skills is an essential element to this position
Strong financial and analytical skills required to analyze information, practices, or procedures to: identify problems and inconsistencies, identify patterns, trends, and relationships, develop logical and objective conclusions; formulate alternatives and their implications
Strong skills in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite is imperative; Oracle, CCH
Flexibility in working hours during peak reporting periods required
Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately, meet deadlines, execute with accuracy and recognize when issues need escalation
