Principia is seeking a new Chief Financial Officer to become a leading player on the team that is actively shaping the future of both School and College. The Chief Financial Officer must be a forward-leaning strategic thinker who can creatively and prudently position Principia’s finances for the immediate, medium, and long-term future. The CFO is a critical member of Principia’s leadership team and must be a highly collaborative team member who both generates and communicates financial information in a timely, useful, and transparent way that builds trust and supports good strategic decisions.
We seek a CFO who strives to shape financial information to deliver insight and to frame clearly decisions faced by managers at all levels. A central responsibility is budgeting – the financial expression of Principia’s strategic aims. More than anything else, the CFO is accountable for information – for knowing what the organization needs to know when it needs to know it, for planning ahead, and for making sure that administrators with budgets to manage have the current information they need without necessarily having to ask for it.
In addition to producing the annual budget, the CFO has line responsibilities. These include responsibility for payroll, accounting, financial reporting and compliance, treasury and cash-flow management, oversight of restricted and designated funds, billing and accounts-payable, relations with auditors, insurance coverage, employee benefit plans, and other financial operations.

The CFO role is the center, but not the boundary, of this position. The post will include other functional roles, but those will be determined by what portfolio best fits the best candidate for the central CFO role.
Principia is a nonprofit Christian Science-based educational institution that includes two campuses – the pre-K-12 Principia School in Saint Louis, Missouri, and Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. They are incorporated as one organization, led by the Board of Trustees and Chief Executive. The Chief Executive’s leadership team includes the Chief Financial Officer, the campus heads, and key administrators of shared services. The Chief Financial Officer is a member of the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees and will regularly report financial performance to the Board.
Between the College and the School, Principia has an enrollment of 850 and an annual budget of about $57 million. Principia has a significant endowment that is managed by the Chief Investment Officer.
A successful candidate for this post must have experience managing the budget process for an organization of some complexity. They must be oriented toward collaboration, shared accountability, and transparency. They must have the demonstrated ability to lead teams. A background in accounting or financial management – directly or indirectly – is important.
An MBA or equivalent degree is preferred. Five or more years of related experience is also preferred.
A commitment to the cause of Christian Science and to its active practice, as well as Christian Science class instruction, is required.
