The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the state’s public health, law, and human services university, seeks an innovative, collaborative, leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President for Facilities and Operations (AVP). This is a significant leadership opportunity for an experienced professional to steward the facilities and associated operations of a vibrant 71-acre campus with 6.2 million square feet of complex bio-medical research and state-of-the-art clinical services and teaching space, located in 67 buildings in the heart of downtown Baltimore. In addition to serving the facilities and operational needs of UMB, the AVP also has direct oversight of a regional service center that directs and manages large construction and renovation projects for University of Maryland System colleges and universities in the Baltimore region. With an overall staff of 426 professional, technical, service trades and administrative staff, the AVP manages 5 direct reports (5 Directors) in 5 large divisions with 17 sections, and a complex $82M budget. This individual is expected to bring deep management skills, functional expertise, and a customer-centric approach in support of the university’s facilities master plan, and the plans of partner institutions via the regional service center. Reporting to the Chief Business and Finance Officer and Vice President of Administration and Finance, and providing leadership to a large and diverse team, the AVP serves on the Administration and Finance leadership team and is accountable for planning, implementation, and operation of all campus building assets. The AVP will be responsible for program management and implementation of best practices for all aspects of campus facilities and grounds operations, maintenance, and construction, including: deferred maintenance, facilities operations (physical plant); building design and construction; grounds maintenance; and environmental health and safety. The AVP will ensure that projects are properly authorized and sufficiently funded, environmentally sound, and completed in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
The selected candidate will be a visionary and inspiring leader with a track record of providing strategic direction and organizational structure in an organization of similar scale and complexity. The AVP will bring broad-based facilities-management experience and a record of leading change, managing resources, and streamlining processes and systems. This individual will be a person of the highest integrity with a collegial style that engenders trust and inspires collaboration, and who is enthusiastic about the day-to-day management of efficient operations and delivering excellent customer service. The AVP will work closely with senior leaders, faculty, staff, various departments, and external customers to achieve facilities-related goals that align with the UMB’s future plans and academic mission.
Candidates should demonstrate prior leadership of similar functions in another higher education institution or comparably complex setting. A bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, facility management, or construction engineering with 12 years of experience is required; in addition to these years of experience, a master’s degree in one of these fields, or a related field, is highly preferred.
