Duties & Responsibilities Reporting to the Dean for Administration at Harvard Law School, the CFO has direct responsibility for the overall financial management of the school's $270+ million operating budget including accountability for the annual operating & capital budgets, fiscal policies and procedures, efficiency and effectiveness of systems and fiscal compliance and control. A key member of the senior management team, the CFO acts as the senior advisor on all matters related to strategic and long-range financial planning and will represent the school at the University level.
The CFO will lead a team of approximately 10 in the execution of the School's financial operations, including strategic and operational financial planning, budgeting, accounting, financial risk assessment, forecasting, and variance analysis. In addition, the CFO will establish and maintain strong cross-functional relationships enterprise wide with peers/Department Heads and HLS faculty leaders as well as the University Vice President for Finance.
Instrumental in setting and executing the overall financial management strategy for the Law School.
Serves as a strategic business partner and sounding board to the Dean for Administration and senior leadership team with the opportunity to make a significant impact by improving operational efficiencies and enhancing processes and technology to support the continued growth of the Law School.
Expected to primarily serve as a strategic financial planner and leader within HLS, although must also address university-wide financial management and policy matters.
Through interaction with university-level leaders, leads the implementation of operational improvements in the areas of budgeting, planning, forecasting, and financial and management reporting.
Works collaboratively with the university to ensure that a proper control environment is implemented and maintained throughout the Law School.
Collaborates with Development personnel to translate elements of the strategic plan into a coherent set of fundraising initiatives.
Provides financial oversight for sponsored and non-sponsored research conducted at HLS and is responsible for maintaining compliance with sponsor regulations and University policies.
Works with a broad constituency of faculty and administrators in a time sensitive environment.

Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree with a minimum 10 years' experience of proven financial leadership in university or not-for-profit environment with demonstrated ability to lead change initiatives in complex, organizationally and intellectually dynamic organizations. Must have demonstrable and successful management and fiscal oversight experience, planning, budgeting, reporting and development of operational metrics to align organizational strategy to business operations. Working knowledge of current technologies surrounding operational management, including budgeting, forecasting and reporting tools (Oracle and/or Hyperion experience a plus).
Additional Qualifications MBA preferred. A proven community builder with exceptional interpersonal, communication, negotiation, presentation skills and political savvy to successfully manage via influence and transparency, gain trust and credibility with the larger internal and external stakeholder audience, and champion cross-functional engagement for change. Expertise in financial principles coupled with familiarity with technologies and their impact on financial functions as well as the overall operation. Must possess solid analytical skills and the ability to think strategically. Strong understanding of multiple funding sources, including gifts endowments and research grants is preferred. Must have strong collaboration and communication skills, and a commitment to customer support. A highly organized and self-directed approach to work. Active listener who is open to new concepts and ideas, able to synthesize complex issues, and provide clarity and illumination to others.
