Interviews patients to obtain complete and accurate demographic, guarantor, PCP and payer information.
Performs the admission check-in process for schedule/unscheduled non-surgical admissions.
Update patient financial information via call transfers from clinics, direct patient calls, pre-registration work queue and edits from electronic payer eligibility responses.
Coordinates admissions with Admission Bed Coordination Center staff. Facilitates lines of communication between ABCC staff, ED Nursing staff, Clinics and Social Work to ensure a seamless registration and admission process
Provides accurate and timely data entry into information systems
Utilizes real-time eligibility to verify coverage is active. Utilizes payer websites and tools to obtain payer information.
Works the Inpatient Work queue for unscheduled admissions- verify and collect insurance benefits through providers and payor portals
Identifies and resolves complex payer issues such as COB, LOI and mismatches between payor information and MiChart
Identifies and assist financially at risk patients and families. Complete basic eligibility screening for Medicaid, Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace Plans and/or MSupport Charity Care program. Refer patients and families to appropriate department for completion of their financial counseling, application, and enrollment into appropriate insurance plane
Obtains patient’s and /or responsible party’s signature on registration and issues required information to patients/responsible party concerning Notice of Privacy Practice, General Consent, Medicare and other compliance forms.
Identifies patient balances and provide basic- level explanation on source of the balance such as date of service, charges, insurance payments/adjustments/denials and patient responsibility. Print itemized statements and create payment plans. Collect and post payments
Provides patients with wayfinding directions, appointment information, and copay amount due.
Recognizes process and system problems; takes steps to investigate and resolve them; escalate to the appropriate person when necessary
Promotes a positive image to patients and their families, visitors, and physicians and other customers by adhering to Michigan Medicine Core Values of Respect, Compassion, Collaboration, Innovation and a Commitment to Excellence.
Greet patients and families, visitors, and employees, and offer assistance in directing customers to their destinations, including locating times and places of appointment, meeting room, cafeteria, etc.
Covers Patient Financial Counseling and MSupport phone lines from 4:00pm to 8:00pm daily.
Assists in creating transportation request for patients waiting in PBSC lounge
High school diploma or G.E.D. Two years of work experience in an office or customer service setting with an outstanding record of attendance and punctuality. Customer-focused interpersonal and communication skills. Computer literacy. Ability to enter a substantial amount of data while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Healthcare registration and billing experience; knowledge of group health plans, government health plans, automobile and workers compensation plans; knowledge of University of Michigan as well as UMHS policies, procedures, regulatory requirements and information systems; work experience in a health care setting; Associate's or Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and education.
40 Hour Appointment
Monday - Friday 12p - 8:30p; will rotate Sat & Sun 8a - 4:30p
